Seeking an Authentic College Experience, this Graduate Ended up Earning a Coveted NC State Scholarship

teslaThis future veterinarian’s love of Organic Chemistry runs deep, but Tesla Anderson’s favorite class while attending Sandhills was Calculus, despite the fact it made her, “laugh, cry, and nearly die from stress”

After she graduated from McDowell High School in Marion, NC, Tesla moved in with her grandparents in Carthage to attend SCC. She choose Sandhills because she wanted to save money but still have an “authentic college experience” by living away from home.

Tesla quickly realized her choice to attend SCC was the perfect option to prepare her for the challenges of a university while dipping her toes in the difficult math and science fields. Her peers and instructors made her two years enjoyable while she worked toward completing a degree.

She fondly reminisced how her own confidence and determination to achieve her goals was boosted. “In the degree program,” she said, “there were so many driven students that set such high goals for themselves.” It made here make and stick to tough targets.

The hard work paid off and Tesla graduated this past May with not only an Associate in Science, but she also received the prestigious Goodnight Scholarship which completely cover her next two years at NC State. She will begin there in the fall of 2018 and plans to pursue a major in Biological Sciences. After completing a Bachelor’s, Tesla will apply to a veterinary school with the ultimate goal of working as a large animal vet or in the field of veterinary research.

The little free time outside of studying she has is spent mostly outdoors horseback riding, whitewater kayaking, hiking, singing, and playing guitar.

In summary, Tesla proudly states, “I figured Sandhills was a good college and it turns out I was right!”
