The goal of Career Development at Sandhills Community College is to assist students in assessing their interests, personality traits, and abilities in setting career and/or educational goals, and in creating a pathway that will lead to economic, social, and educational success. The college has many of these classes beginning in October.
“How to Write a Dynamic Résumé” will help students improve their resume by using marketing and branding techniques that will enhance their chance of getting a job interview in a competitive job market. Students will learn to use keywords to get their resume noticed on the internet.
“How to Write a Dynamic Résumé” will be held Monday-Thursday, Oct. 2-5 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. The cost is $75 and will be waived for qualified students.
“How to Interview with Confidence” will teach students how to sell themselves and stand out from
the crowd. Students will receive tips for the interview: what to say, how to say it, and the ten questions that will make or break your interview. You will become more confident as you participate in mock interviews.

Instructor, Phil Laton’s “Re-Employment Services Workshop” is designed for students who are re-entering the workforce and need to refresh their interview and employment skill set. This workshop will aid students in discovering a career that matches skills or helps develop a training plan to learn new skills, explore career opportunities, and develop a written plan of action. Students will have the opportunity to create or update their résumé, customizing it for different jobs. Students will also learn to deal with the stress of long-term unemployment, sell themselves, and stand out from other applicants in an interview.
The cost for the “Re-Employment Services Workshop” is $75 and is waived for qualified students. There are two sessions per month on Wednesdays at 9-10:30 a.m. at NCWorks Career Center-Moore County in Aberdeen. Call Pamela Alsobrook at (910) 944.7697 for more information and to register.
“Analyzing and Solving Problems in the Workplace” will help students improve their analytical skills as they learn to recognize and define problems that cause workplace conflict and develop workable solutions to resolve them. Learn to be a valuable team member and how to interact with supervisors to meet their expectations.

“Communication Skills” will teach students what communication is and engage in exchanges using the communication cycle. Discover why listening is an integral part of communicating. Conquer the fear of speaking in public as new skills are practiced.
“Communication Skills” will be held Monday-Thursday, Oct. 23-26 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. The cost is $75 and will be waived for qualified students.
“Financial Literacy” will help students improve their opportunity for financial success by learning basic economic principles. Use them to develop the knowledge, reasoning skills, and confidence to take responsibility for the future.
“Financial Literacy” will be held Monday-Thursday, Oct. 30-Nov. 9 from 12:30-3:30 p.m. The cost is $75 and will be waived for qualified students.
“Working Smart” is the only NC soft skill credential work and life skills that give students a competitive edge. Develop personal branding, understand employer expectations, learn the 4-C’s of communication, and enhance productivity in the workplace. Class available to all and may be free for qualified students. Students may also be eligible for a Continuing Education scholarship.
