During a recent tour visit to the west coast, our family visited Alcatraz and “stumbled” into their Island Garden Tour. In addition to learning about the prison’s history, we collected some tidbits about the composting efforts done to maintain the gardens on the island as well as local competitions in……yes, composting.
“In fact, composting is catching on so much that in 2009 San Francisco, California, passed legislation that makes composting mandatory for residents. Now, the city diverts 80% of its waste from the landfill, closing in on its zero waste goal by 2020.
