The Public Safety Department at Sandhills Community College works in partnership with multiple accrediting agencies to provide training, certification and recertification, and specialty programs to meet the needs of local public safety agencies.
Whether you are a student seeking a career as a firefighter or a seasoned veteran needing annual recertification, the Public Safety Department has ongoing course offerings to meet needs. Programs and courses are recognized as an Office of State Fire Marshall (OSFM) Accredited Delivery Agency to meet all state and local training standards.
You can gain entry level training in emergency response through hands-on training and clinical experience in “EMT-Basic.” This course will help develop skills needed to provide emergency care for the sick and injured. Students will learn to respond to a variety of emergency medical situations and upon successful completion, will be able to sit for the state certification exam. A high school diploma or high school equivalency is a prerequisite for this course. Please bring a copy on the first night of class. The cost is $180 plus a $5 tech fee.
“EMT-Basic” will be held Aug. 15-Dec. 12 on Mondays and Tuesdays (some Thursdays and Saturdays) from 6-10 p.m. The cost is $180 plus a $5 tech fee.
Students will gain the skills needed to possibly save a life in “CPR for Healthcare Providers.” This is the ideal class for healthcare professionals who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings. The cost is $50 plus a $6 card fee.
“CPR for Healthcare Providers” will be offered Thursday, Aug. 31 from 6-10 p.m. The class will also be offered Saturday, Sept. 16 from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Through the “Detention Officer Certification Course,” structured under guidelines and requirements as set forth by North Carolina Sheriff’s Education and Training Standards Commission, students will learn
the skills and receive the training needed to prepare for a job in a correctional facility. Students will engage in learning through lecture, demonstrations, and practical exercises. Throughout the course, students must demonstrate competency in all skill areas, successfully complete 22 blocks of instruction, and pass a state administered exam to be eligible for certification as a detention officer. “Detention Officer Certification Course” will be held at the Rick Rhyne Public Safety Center, Sept. 11-Oct. 13 Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. The cost is $180 plus a $5 tech fee.
“Firefighter Certification Classes” are offered throughout the semester on nights and weekends at the Larry R. Caddell Public Safety Training Center in Carthage. Register in the Sandhills Community College Continuing Education office located on the first floor of Van Dusen Hall on the Pinehurst campus at 3395 Airport Road.
